Slightly off topic but this thread (particularly the part about legal issues being worked out) has prompted me to order the remastered Sign 'O' The Times Blu Ray from Japan. Supposedly it looks amazing and I've held off on buying for years, but I figure it'll be a LONG time before something like that gets cleared to be released domestically now that the future distribution details are likely in their infancy given the Universal situation. I found it for a decent price on Amazon Japan, so.thanks I guess for pushing me to a decision. I bought the same blu-ray on ebay at probably the worst possible time (weeks after his death) and I think I paid $75 for the privilege. There's just enough English in the menus to muddle on through. As a well-filmed, under-control document of what Prince WANTED his concert presentation to be, it is a completely legitimate and awesome experience (except for 'U got the Look'. WTF?) But it is different from the official Syracuse '85.

I definitely was not criticizing the SotT film with my earlier comparison. Are you talking specifically about the Japanese remaster or the Australian version that's also out there? This one is supposedly better than this one:I got it for just about $40 shipped from Amazon Japan, so.not too rich for my blood but I wouldn't want to pay any more than that. Again, it may come out in better quality someday but I think it'll be quite a ways off given the current situation.I also understand it's a completely different beast from the Syracuse '85 DVD, however I've been reading for years about (many) people saying 'the live versions of the songs in the Sign 'O' The Times movie are better than the studio versions on the LP'. Well now I can find out for myself and since I can rip Blu Ray audio (losslessly), I'll have a nice audio document for listening as well. Thanks for the heads up about the Japanese menus. I have the Australian edition.

Before I purchased it I did a lot of research online and never came across any comprehensive A/B comparisons of the different pressings of the blu ray editions. Plenty of chatter and random comments at Prince forums but nothing I would take as gospel. I think it's safe to assume there aren't multiple high-def transfers of the movie floating around out there that the different countries would have to choose from, so it's almost certainly the same transfer used for both editions. I am quite happy with the Australian version and I'm sure you'll love the Japanese edition too! I too have the Australian Blu-ray of SOTT and the video quality is ok, though it doesn't feel like a huge step up from the DVD. What would interest me the most is if the Japanese sound track (DTS HD MA) is different from the Australian (Dolby True HD).

Especially the stereo track, since mine has only a 5.1 mix.And yes, 'U Got The Look' always looked like TV video quality inserted into a film. Even back watching it in the theatre I found it obvious that he just used the video clip to add the song. Apart from the look (pun intended) it's also clearly the studio version of the song (with a slightly longer intro), not a live version. After 30 years I can't possibly say for sure, but I don't think the song was part of the concert when I saw it. Probably because it wouldn't work too well without Sheena. Some infos if that's helpful for you. This is the Japanese Blu-ray.I have ripped the 48 kHz / 16-bit stereo audio to FLAC, and it sounds excellent to me, save for a couple of small digital glitches (one in the Interlude just before I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man.

And the other one I can't even remember).I've bought the other release for a friend, but I haven't seen it yet, sorry. My only complain is that it's not a 12-hour-long performance. Otherwise, I could probably live with this single piece of music in my life.
